Overview
The Canadian dollar (CAD) has shown renewed strength against the U.S. dollar (USD), with the USD/CAD pair declining for three consecutive sessions, down approximately 1.0%. This trend highlights the growing strength of the CAD despite the release of soft inflation data from Canada.
Canada Inflation Day Arrives
Recent inflation figures from Canada revealed that core inflation measures were slightly below market expectations. The Trimmed CPI year-over-year was reported at 1.8%, below the expected 1.9%, while the Median CPI year-over-year came in at 1.9%, compared to a forecast of 2.0%. Despite these figures, annual CPI remains elevated at 3.1%, indicating persistent inflation pressures.
The stability in Canadian bond yields, particularly around the 4.0% mark, has supported demand for CAD-denominated assets. Concurrently, the U.S. dollar has shown signs of moderation, allowing the CAD to recover some ground lost in previous weeks.
Is the Relationship with Oil Becoming Relevant Again?
Canada's economy is closely tied to the energy sector, being one of the largest oil producers globally. Recent increases in crude oil prices have begun to positively impact the CAD, with a correlation coefficient of 0.56 indicating a meaningful relationship between oil prices and the CAD. As oil prices approach $100 per barrel, this relationship may continue to support the CAD's strength against the USD.
USD/CAD Technical Forecast
The technical outlook for USD/CAD indicates a renewed bearish bias. Although there was an attempt to establish a bullish trend, momentum has waned, leading to a potential consolidation phase. Key levels to monitor include:
- 1.42321 – Key Resistance: A significant high that could restore bullish momentum if reached.
- 1.41606 – Near-Term Barrier: A level aligning with previous retracement zones.
- 1.39959 – Critical Support: A major support level that, if breached, could reinforce a bearish trend.
Indicators such as the MACD and RSI suggest a balanced momentum environment, reflecting indecision in the market.
