Market Wrap: European Stocks Rise Following US Elections

The recent US midterm election results, which saw the Democrats taking control of Congress, have led to significant market shifts, particularly benefiting European stock exchanges. This political change has sparked a renewed risk appetite among investors, resulting in notable gains across European bourses. Southern European indices, particularly in Italy and Spain, have surged by approximately 2.5% to 3%, while the Euro Stoxx 50 index has risen nearly 2%. This rally is accompanied by a marked decrease in market volatility.

Investor sentiment in Europe is further buoyed by a capital flight into US Treasuries and a sharp decline in the value of the dollar. Concurrently, inflation in the Eurozone is accelerating, with the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) estimated to have reached around 4% year-on-year, the highest level in three years, largely driven by a more than 20% increase in energy prices. This inflationary pressure coincides with a drop in Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) readings to multi-month lows, complicating the European Central Bank's monetary policy decisions. In response, Sweden's Riksbank has already tightened its policy, raising interest rates by 25 basis points to 2% and signaling potential further increases.

Foreign Exchange Market

The US dollar has faced significant selling pressure, experiencing its weakest session since September and depreciating against all major currencies. Investors are adjusting their expectations regarding fiscal spending from the White House, which has negatively impacted the dollar's valuation. Consequently, the EUR/USD exchange rate has approached 1.12, while the British pound has risen to approximately 1.35. Antipodean currencies, including the New Zealand dollar (NZD) and the Australian dollar (AUD), have also appreciated by around 0.7% against the weakening dollar. This trend is reflected in the domestic market, where the USD/PLN rate has retreated to about 3.91.

Commodities Market

In the commodities sector, gold prices surged nearly 3%, surpassing the $4000 mark, driven by a weaker dollar and declining bond yields. Silver also saw strong gains, appreciating over 4.5%. Conversely, Brent crude oil prices fell by less than 2% to around $102 per barrel, influenced by a reduction in geopolitical risk following the elections and ongoing US-Iran diplomatic negotiations. WTI crude oil prices similarly declined by about 2%, settling around $95 per barrel due to easing supply concerns. Natural gas prices in Europe experienced a sharp sell-off of over 6%, dropping below €89/MWh.

European Equities

The financial sector led the European market rally, gaining nearly 4% as investors anticipated the European Central Bank's commitment to maintaining higher interest rates, which is expected to attract capital back to undervalued European banks. Other sectors, including utilities, consumer goods, and telecommunications, also recorded solid gains of over 2%. However, the technology sector faced a slight decline of less than 0.3%, primarily due to investor caution regarding potential cuts in AI spending.

Notable Stock Performances

  • Ahold Delhaize (AD.NL): The company saw its stock rise over 5.5% following strong quarterly results, a €1 billion share buyback announcement, and plans to acquire Tesco stores in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
  • Bayer (BAYN.DE): Continued gains of over 3% were noted after solid Q3 results and improved sector sentiment following Novo Nordisk's raised guidance.
  • Siemens Energy (ENR.DE): The stock corrected by less than 3% after reaching multi-month highs amid uncertainty regarding US infrastructure spending post-election.
  • Rheinmetall (RHM.DE): The Democratic victory raised concerns over tighter military spending oversight, leading to a decline of around 2% in its stock price.
  • ASML Holding (ASML.NL): The stock faced valuation pressure, declining over 1.5% due to fears of slowing capital expenditure momentum for data centers and AI chips.

Overall, the market's reaction to the US elections has created a dynamic environment for European stocks, with various sectors responding differently to the shifting political landscape and economic indicators.
