Silver Analysis: XAG/USD Falls Back to Annual Lows

Market Overview
Recent trading sessions have been particularly challenging for silver prices, with significant selling pressure leading to three consecutive losing sessions. This has resulted in a decline of nearly 8.5%, bringing silver back to its lowest levels of the year. The loss of market appeal for silver is evident in recent trading activity.
Impact of Inflation Data
The recent U.S. inflation figures have contributed to silver's weakness. The annual Consumer Price Index (CPI) came in at 3.7%, exceeding expectations of 3.6%, while Core CPI rose to 2.6%, above the forecast of 2.5%. These figures indicate persistent inflation, which is well above the Federal Reserve's target of 2.0%. Consequently, expectations for higher interest rates have increased, making alternative investments more attractive compared to precious metals like silver.
Market Dynamics
The strength of the U.S. dollar and the bond market has further pressured silver prices. With 10-year U.S. Treasury yields trading near 5.2%, investors are drawn to these higher yields, which diminishes the appeal of non-yielding assets like silver. The DXY index, which measures the U.S. dollar against major currencies, remains above 102, indicating sustained demand for the dollar.
Gold-to-Silver Ratio
The gold-to-silver ratio has climbed to around 73, indicating that more ounces of silver are needed to purchase one ounce of gold. This trend reflects a growing preference for gold over silver among investors, highlighting silver's weaker performance in comparison to gold in recent weeks.
Technical Forecast
Silver is currently in a broader bearish trend, with key technical indicators suggesting continued selling pressure. The MACD histogram remains below the neutral line, indicating a momentum favoring sellers. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is approaching the oversold zone, which may signal potential for short-term bullish corrections.
Key Levels to Watch:
- $62: Critical resistance level aligning with the long-term bearish trendline.
- $58: Near-term barrier that could indicate short-term bullish corrections.
- $55: Critical support level coinciding with the year's lows; sustained moves below this could reinforce bearish sentiment.
