Summary of Oil and Gas Market Sell-Off

On November 2, 2026, the energy commodities market experienced a significant sell-off, with Brent crude oil prices dropping by 7.33% to $105.08 per barrel and U.S. WTI falling by 5.97% to $96.77. European natural gas prices saw an even sharper decline, plummeting by 10.21%, marking the largest one-day drop in several months. This market reaction was primarily driven by a shift in geopolitical dynamics, particularly concerning U.S.-Iran relations.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that President Trump favors a diplomatic resolution to the conflict with Iran, stating that no decision has been made regarding military action. Concurrently, Iranian President Pezeshkian announced that the Supreme Leader has empowered the government to engage in peace talks. Ongoing negotiations between Iranian and Qatari officials have reportedly led to a draft agreement aimed at ending hostilities, which has contributed to the market's rapid unwinding of risk premiums that had been built up in anticipation of military escalation.

The sell-off in oil and gas markets reflects a broader trend of speculators reversing positions that were established based on fears of conflict escalation, particularly in light of the upcoming U.S. midterm elections. Brent crude had previously closed October at a six-month high due to these concerns, but the recent developments have led to a swift correction.

The Dutch TTF natural gas contract's significant drop is indicative of the market's sensitivity to geopolitical news, as it relinquishes gains that were previously attributed to fears of disruptions in liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies from the Gulf region and through the Strait of Hormuz. The current sell-off is characterized by a bearish engulfing candlestick pattern on the daily chart, suggesting a potential blow-off top after a vertical rally that saw prices rise from around 70 to over 100.

Technical analysis reveals two critical volume clusters that may act as support levels in the event of further price declines. The first cluster is located in the 85-90 range, which overlaps with previous structural resistance, while the second, denser cluster is found in the 70-80 range, representing the highest trading volume in recent weeks. Maintaining prices above these clusters could indicate a healthy correction within the ongoing uptrend.

The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is currently falling to 58.65, moving away from overbought territory, suggesting that there is still room for further price cooling before stabilization occurs. As long as prices remain above the 85-90 zone, the medium-term outlook remains bullish; however, a drop below 70 could signal a more significant reversal, potentially leading to a decline toward the EMA200 around 60.
