Market Wrap: European Stocks Rise as Banks Beat Earnings Expectations

Date: October 13, 2026

Market Overview

The European stock market is experiencing a moderately positive session, with major indices showing gains. The British FTSE 100 has risen by nearly 0.7%, while the French CAC 40 and the German DAX have both increased by almost 0.2%. The Spanish IBEX 35 is also recording a slight gain.

Macroeconomic Insights

In Germany, inflation has risen to 3.3% year-on-year in September, up from 2.9% in August. This increase is primarily driven by a 14.9% surge in energy prices, while core inflation remains stable at 2.4%. The persistent inflationary pressures may bolster arguments for further monetary policy tightening by the European Central Bank (ECB) and support market expectations for additional interest rate hikes this year.

Geopolitical Situation

The geopolitical landscape remains tense, particularly in the Middle East. Yemen's Houthis have threatened the United States with a "swift and painful" response if they join the Saudi offensive against the Iran-backed group. Iran has announced an agreement with Oman to establish a temporary maritime route, although this does not imply reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Egypt has called for an immediate halt to Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and advocates for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict. Former President Donald Trump has expressed skepticism regarding China's and Russia's support for Iran, suggesting that both nations would have too much to lose.

Commodities and Energy

Rising tensions in the Middle East have contributed to an increase in oil prices, with Brent crude hovering around $105 per barrel. Additionally, gas prices in Europe have risen by nearly 2%, driven by disruptions in LNG transport through the Strait of Hormuz and unplanned outages in Norway's gas infrastructure. Low EU gas inventories, currently at about 73% of storage capacity, are raising concerns as winter approaches, potentially increasing demand and exerting upward pressure on prices.

Precious Metals

In the precious metals market, there is a cautious optimism. Gold futures have risen by approximately 0.4%, testing the $4,200 level, while silver has gained around 0.2%, trading at $60.5 per ounce.

Corporate Earnings (USA)

In the United States, several major banks have reported their Q3 earnings. Goldman Sachs exceeded market expectations with earnings per share of $17.01, compared to the expected $12.86, and revenue of $18.68 billion, surpassing forecasts of $16.83 billion. Wells Fargo reported earnings per share of $1.87, slightly above the consensus of $1.85, but its revenue fell short at $21.87 billion against expectations of $22.31 billion. UnitedHealth also reported better-than-expected results, with earnings per share of $4.69 versus a consensus of $4.12, and raised its full-year EPS guidance. Conversely, JPMorgan Chase's earnings per share of $5.75 fell short of the expected $5.93, leading to a negative market reaction due to weaker trading revenues.

Cryptocurrency Market

The cryptocurrency market is also showing positive sentiment, with Bitcoin gaining over 1% and surpassing the $83,000 level, while Ethereum has risen by about 0.5%, testing the $2,500 level.
